The Department of Economic Studies was established on August 1st, 2018, as one of the three departments of the School of Economics to attract and train self-motivated students to compete favourably in today's globalised world of work. Currently, the Department, in collaboration with other departments in the Faculty of Social Sciences, trains students to acquire the B.A (Social Sciences) degree. The Department also runs the B.A and BSc Economics programmes with the main objective of producing graduates with strong quantitative and analytical skills to conduct rigorous economic analysis. The specific objectives of the programmes are to:
-
Develop the capacity of students to place economic issues in the right perspective and apply appropriate analytical tools.
-
Equip students with a strong basis in the concepts, theories, and quantitative techniques in economics.
-
Equip students with solid quantitative and analytical skills to rigorously do economic simulations and to make informed decisions regarding economic choices.
The Department also offers MPhil and Ph.D. programmes in Economics in order to facilitate the academic progression of students. The Department has qualified faculty members who employ practical approaches in the teaching of economics and also collaborate with the African Economic Research Consortium (AERC), headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya, in the training of graduate students.
